On the night our Temple burned two years ago (28th April 2018), Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey passed away. In 1986 Larry and some friends had the impulse to create an effigy of a man and drag it down to Baker Beach in San Francisco to burn it. His impulse and readiness to react to the rich non-conformist, playful, pranksterish environment in which he did it led to the creation of Burning Man, regional burns and in turn, AfrikaBurn. Larry was known for wearing a grey Stetson hat in honour of his father. Last year Artcom decided to start a tradition of doing a hat burn to honour of Larry on the anniversary of the day he left this mortal coil. Because of the date, it ends up being the first burn at AfrikaBurn, which feels fitting. Let’s celebrate burns, let’s celebrate Larry… who was a bit of a giant.
